Internship
environment
The current system of mobile
application ticketing system is becoming more rigid and expensive. Ruckus gives
a mobile portfolio of mobile application services that manage mobile education
and learning management system. Ruckus is a mobile application tool designed
for entertaining educating the children by having well-known children brands in
place. Besides being a curative model for children, Ruckus also gives
information to the parents. As the world experiences the evolution of computer
games engulfing different industry parts, Ruckus provides an interaction medium
capable of serving a large part of the digital consumer. The headquarters of
the company are in San Francisco, California. I requested to get attached to
the company’s facility, and the permission got granted. However, I would work
remotely from New Jersey. The information system manager would be the
organizational personnel under who I was supposed work. I was now ready to get
allocated a project.
My
role in Kiwitech was developing Ruckus mobile application. Furthermore, my
responsibilities were planning, designing the system, project development,
implementation, maintaining the project, and eventually documentation.
Therefore, I would get golden opportunities to work on several stages of system
development life cycle. Ruckus is a mobile application based on problem and
change management. The mobile application as a service tool has proven beyond
doubt that it is efficient and less rigid. Other roles included requirements
gathering, functionality development using Ruckus, resolving issues,
troubleshooting, and researching the functional requirements of Ruckus. I would
also link the managers and the clients during the application development while
creating daily reports and schedules. My main aspiration is to achieve a better
understanding of mobile application technologies, software development skills,
management and decision-making through the time I would get attached the
Kiwitech facilities. My internship goal exploring and understanding the
benefits of the whole system development life cycle while providing technical
assistance to the development of Ruckus (McWherter & Gowell, 2012)
Methodology
Action research on information
systems gets performed with the aims of making theoretical contributions and
look for a viable solution to the current and future problems. The study has
shown that action research gets performed with anticipation that it will
improve the organizational system by imposing changes having studied the
problem thoroughly. Action research implements changes whose target is
improving the problem under study. Therefore, it is a requirement that action
researchers gain understanding of the importance they are bringing to the
project. Gaining understanding is the best way through which they will
understand what they aspire to achieve, why they have such aspirations, and the
viability of their expected solutions (Denzin & Lincoln, 1998)
Kurt Lewin contributed to the
discovery of action research in 1946. His immense contribution made him get
recognized as the father of action research. He was the first to give a clear
and comprehensive definition of action research. Action research it is a
research that compares conditions and influences of forms of social action and
the research leading to that specific social action. The process has spiral
steps where each is a composition of planning, action, and fact-finding about
anticipated outcomes (Tashakori & Teddie, 2003)
The
process of action research
Action research is a four-phase
process of project development. The four phases are:
Planning
The most notable achievement of
planning is a comprehensive plan of the action intended by the researchers or
the changes intended. The stage also assigns responsibilities to different
individuals in the team (Elliot, 1991)
Action
The unpredictability nature of
reality can mess the whole process. Everything will not align itself as per the
plan that will, therefore, necessitate changes in the process (Elliot, 1991)
Development
The stage incorporates revision and
improvements. Is also develop plans for future actions (Elliot, 1991)
Reflection
Frequent reflection with the project
stakeholders is a critical element of a project approached by action research.
Innovations can get aligned as the activity proceeds (Elliot, 1991)
Importance
of action research
Action research employs thorough
assessment of evidence in hand. Therefore, action research is practical and
relevant. Action research is not a research and vice versa. Action research has
a minimal emphasis on the standards of findings. Additionally, the researcher
places more relevance on the findings. Action research at organization level
understands how a system that defines social context interacts. Kurt Lewin had
previously defined action research as a way through which social systems or
organizational learning gets understood. His claims were that the best way that
a system would get understood is by trying to implement changes (Lewin, 1946)
Action research has shown that it is
unlimited by self-study boundaries. Its actions, results, objectives, and
presumptions are inside complicated systems. The action researcher should
formulate a theory intended to introduce change within a social system having
assumed the outcomes. However, testing of theory should attend data carefully
and skillful in data interpretation and analysis. Action researcher can have
detailed and deep understanding of changes in the social context within the
organizations with the help of activity, social network, and network theories.
Furthermore, assessment tools such as surveys, interviews, and focus groups may
help the action researcher too.
Action research solves problematic
issues by assessing functional requirements of a process. The four phases of
action research discussed earlier: planning, action, observation, and
reflection get carried out iteratively. Action researcher will take action
based on the reflection of the iteration.
Action research is the most suitable
methodology in Ruckus. Ruckus Mobile application deals with problem and change
management. Therefore, the methodology fits Ruckus development suitably. The
internship at Kiwitech has four phases. Training comes in phase one where one gains
application knowledge. The intern gets allocated the development project in the
second phase. The intern identifies potential changes in the project and
corrects them in that very phase. The
third phase comes immediately where the intern implements all the changes,
record them and eventually document for future reference. The final phase of
the project requires the intern to testing the project. Changes and needed
corrections are identified and made immediately. Finally, the system is
commissioned, and maintenance could now take place. Therefore, action research
is an effective and the right tool that can get used to tracking the four
stages through which internship at Kiwitech will pass through
