Psychology Essay

The physical symptoms described in the video refer to the case of a clerk in the city a cleaner shot in the back of the head. She complained of pains in the neck and the head in the phone call to the police. In chapter 3 of the Biopsychology textbook by John P.J Pinel, there is a description of the anatomy of the nervous system including; the spinal cord and the major structures of the brain. The brain and the spinal cord from the central nervous system that evaluates the information and make decisions. The nerves of the head and neck are among the most important organs of the nervous system.

When the woman had a shot in the back of the brain, she complained of neck and head pains due to the damage to some nerves on the skull. The brain has cerebrospinal fluid that prevent against shocks to the inner parts of the brain. The liquid prevented the impact on the scalp from getting fractures. The sensory nerves passed the pain information to the brain in order for a woman to complain of the same.
At the hindbrain is the cerebellum that has a mass of neurons that controls coordination and balance. Damage to this section would make a woman not able to know what exactly happened due to lack of coordination. The bullet hit the skull without penetrating entirely to the brain. Thus, no part of the brain got major injuries unless the nerves and tissues of the scalp. The penetration of the bullet in just a short length would result in the damage.
The woman also complained that her vision got impairments and could not even dial the numbers on the phone properly. Visual sense has provision from the brain at the back and sides though the eyes are at the front. Seeing and recognizing an object involves the processing of image by the cells in the retina and the brain. Thus, if some nerves on the back of the brain got damaged by the bullet, the vision processes could have problems. That’s why the woman could not see clearly.
Other physical symptoms that could have resulted if the bullet penetrated the skull and entered the brain
Penetration of the bullet to the brain would cause traumatic brain injury due to the open head injury. The implications of the injury depend on the destructive path of the bullet. The physical symptoms could be a loss of consciousness for some time, headaches, nausea and vomiting, fatigue or drowsiness, difficulty sleeping, bleeding, and dizziness.
In addition, the victim may not lose the consciousness but may be in a state of confusion or disorientation. In some cases, the patients are not able to awaken from sleep and have clear fluids draining from the nose or the ears.
The most probable part that could result in the symptoms is the back of the brain since the woman got the shot while lying down on the back. The bullet that penetrates the skull causes severe, irreparable damage to the brain cells, blood vessels and the protective tissues around the brain. Bleeding in and around the brain and the blood clots often disrupts oxygen supply to the brain and would result in further damages.
